Chief Science-Technology Officer (CSO/CTO)
Juan C. Ramirez is a Doctor in Sciences (1992, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid), and virologist, a field in which he has developed his professional career for around 30 years.
His work has been focused on molecular, morphogenetic, and pathogenic mechanisms of the DNA virus. Furthermore, he worked in the field of vaccines, developing new immunization strategies through the use of attenuated vectors of the vaccinia virus, for use in vaccines against HIV, such as immunization co-stimulated by cytokines and virus DNA-vector regimes (prime-boost).
Finally, he applied his experience to gene therapy for inflammatory diseases through the use of retrovirus and lentivirus. In the last ten years, he has directed the Viral Vector Technical Unit at the Spanish Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares (CNIC) in Madrid, designing and producing lentivirus, adenovirus, and AAV vectors for research.
During this period, he combined his research work with university teaching in Virology for Biotechnologists.
In recent years, he has focused his work on viral engineering, developing new tools based on non-integrative lentivirus used in safe gene modification. These developments directed towards the insertion of genes at specific loci, and genetic editing combining lentivirus, recombinase and nuclease such as CRISPR/Cas9, are the basis of the development of the LENTISOMA platform.
